Kibale Forest National Park is one of the best chimpanzee trekking destinations in the World with about 1500 chimpanzees in addition to offering chances of seeing other 12 primate species. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park on the other hand is unstoppable when it comes to gorilla trekking with over 18 fully habituated gorilla groups to spend quality time with. This 6-day trip starts and ends in Kampala with Rhino tracking, boat cruises, game drives, gorilla treks, cultural tours and chimpanzee treks lined up for travellers.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Travel from Kampala to Murchison falls National Park via Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Amidst excitement and high expectation for the safari have breakfast and be ready for pick-up by your safari driver by 7:00am. Kick-off the journey from Kampala and drive north-westwards through the popular Towns of Luwero and Nakasongola, with a stop at the latter. Later branch-off to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for Rhino tracking and have a lunch break at Kabalega Diners. Continue to Murchison falls National Park. On entering the gates of Uganda’s most popular National Park, head for the hike to the top of the falls to clearly watch large volumes of waters (from River Nile) squeezing through a narrow gorge and dropping over 45 meters into a Devil’s cauldron and creating a thunderous sound, spray of water as well as breathtaking rainbow. The sunset views in this Park are breathtaking, hence make sure to have your camera to capture such priceless moments while being driven to the booked safari Lodge.
Day 2: All day tour of Murchison falls National Park
After having a hot cup of tea/coffee, prepare yourself for an early game drive in the company of expert Ranger guide attached to Uganda Wildlife Authority. He/she will take you to some of the game hot spots in the Park where African bush elephants, Oribis, Rothschild giraffes, Bushbucks, Defassa waterbucks, warthogs, lions, Bohor reedbucks, leopards, spotted hyenas, Oribis, Cape buffaloes, Jackson’s hartebeests, Hippos and olive baboons among others will be encountered. Surprisingly, it is not just animal views that will be enjoyed during the game drive but also sights of beautiful bird species and breathtaking Landscapes. After 3-4 hours of the informative game drive, this Murchison falls tour will now lead to the Paraa jetty for the start of the boat cruise where more animals and birds will be encountered. Some of the unmissable attractions are Hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes and birds (pink-backed pelicans, African fish eagles, Goliath herons, Pied and giant kingfishers and Egyptian Goose among others).
Day 3: Transfer from Murchison falls National Park to Kibale Forest National Park via Fort Portal
After a leisurely breakfast drive to Kibale Forest National Park through the lush countryside, rural homesteads and well-cultivated farmlands while appreciating views of the Albertine Rift Escarpments and snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains. Make a stop at Fort Portal Town (in the shadows of the Rwenzori Mountains) for a hot meal and continue to the booked Lodge for relaxation and slumber.
Day 4: Trekking Chimpanzees in Kibale Forest National Park and drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Report for registration and briefing with your lunch box, drinking water and other trekking gear after a sumptuous breakfast. By 8:00am begin the search for habituated chimpanzees in Kibale Forest and surprisingly, you will come across other residents of the forest such as black and white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, blue monkeys as well as birds especially the rare green-breasted pitta and grey blue Turaco among others. You will also be provided with detailed information on outstanding tree species. After this trek, enjoy Lunch at the Lodge and proceed to the popular Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for dinner and slumber.
Day 5: Trekking Bwindi Mountain Gorillas, south-western Uganda
This indelible day starts with breakfast followed by briefing at the Park Headquarters from Uganda Wildlife Authority Rangers. Don’t forget the rain jacket, drinking water, lunch box, energy-giving snacks, camera and binoculars before heading for briefing and venturing into the jungles to search for the mountain gorillas. Tracking time is unpredictable but ranges between 1 and 5 hours, and is worthwhile because the thrill of meeting face to face with mountain gorillas is second to none. Spend your evening in the community, learning about their traditions and cultures, local dishes and dances.
Day 6: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to Entebbe/Kampala
Embark on the return journey to Entebbe or Kampala, with en-route Lunch at Igongo Cultural Center and photography at Equator crossing.
